I like recording outdoor. Most of the field recordings I do are made using a surround microphone. Recording this way I experience a perceptual shift; I no longer capture sound, instead I capture a sense of place through sound. Additionally, while recording I am granted time to listen, observe and reflect.
In 2002 I moved to Ågotnes at the Sotra island west of Bergen. As the city of Bergen expands, these places undergo rapid changes from rural area to suburb. New residential areas are built, and the local businesses are closely linked to and affected by international events and economic conjunctures. The act of recording becomes a means for tapping into and monitor how society change. As I do so, I become increasingly interested in the dynamics, structures and sound environments of the suburb.
This website is a place for sharing some of these recordings, reflect on the recorded places, and what it means to make such field recordings.
